The Origin of the Name Nunavut

The meaning of Nunavut is the Inuktitut word for our land.  Nunavut is one of the three territories and 10 provinces that make up Canada. Nunavut became a territory of Canada in 1999, formed from the eastern region of the mainland Northwest Territories and most of the Arctic Archipelago.  The vast territory is helmed by its capital,  Iqaluit, located at the head of  Frobisher Bay  on southern  Baffin Island. In 1975, an accord, the  James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, was agreed upon  between the Canadian federal government, the Province of Quebec and Inuit representatives. This accord resulted in the establishment of the  Kativik Regional Government  in the Nunavik territory, and the residents of all 14 Nunavik settlements now elect their own representatives in regional elections. The Inuktitut Language Inuktitut, or Eastern Canadian  Inuktitut, is one of the principal  Inuit languages  of  Canada. It is also an aboriginal language that is  written  using the Canadian Aboriginal syllabics. Syllabics is a family of  consonant-based alphabets called abugidas. It is used by several Aboriginal  Canadian  language families including Algonquian,  Inuit, and Athabaskan.   Vastly different from the  Latin script used by more widespread  languages, the use of  syllabics greatly increases the likelihood of literacy among readers, due to its ease of use.   The Inuktitut language is spoken throughout Arctic Canada, including all areas north of the  tree line. The northern regions in the provinces of Quebec, Newfoundland Labrador,  Manitoba,  and  Nunavut use the language, as well as the Northwest Territories.  Inuktitut not only refers to the language but the entire culture of the Eastern Canadian Inuit.   Inuit Culture and Language The Inuit mannerisms, social behaviors, and values make up Inuktitut, in addition to the written and spoken word. An Inuktitut education takes place outside of traditional schools in the home,  and also on the land, sea, and ice. Young tribe members observe their parents and elders  and practice their new language and life skills in order to perfect them. The word  Inuit means the people, and it is an autonym. The singular form is  Inuk. Lifestyle Based Around Extreme Weather Conditions The Inuit lifestyle is completely based around the  extreme weather conditions they must endure. Basic survival skills along with fishing, hunting and  trapping are essential for daily life. Agriculture has always been an impossibility, so instead, the  Inuit diet is unlike any typical eating plan found elsewhere in the world. Beluga whale, seal, arctic char, crab, walrus, caribou, duck, moose, caribou, quail and geese make up almost the entirety of their diet, except in the warmer months when field roots and  berries, such as cloudberries are picked and served, when in season. This meat and fat-heavy diet has proven to be a health issue for the Inuits. Many suffer from  a  low  calcium and vitamin D intake, but surprisingly, a vitamin C definitely has not been an issue for most.

Jazz at Bandera On Wednesday night I attended a jazz performance at Bandera restaurant in Brentwood, Los Angeles. Bandera has a jazz performance every weekdnights, and a band named â€Å"The Marbles† were playing on that magnificent night. The best songs I really enjoyed during the performance were â€Å"Embraceable You,† by Nat King Ko, â€Å"She is Funny that Way,† by Billy Holiday, and â€Å"Everybody Needs Somebody,† by Jimmy Scott. Although I arrived a little late, I was able to find a cozy place at the bar close to the stage. When the band arrived they wasted no time and got ready to set up their equipment and got ready to play some music. They first connected the piano and brought out the bass. The band consisted of three members. I tried to Google names of the band members but with so many results coming up I wasn’t able to pin point which name belonged to whom. But that didn’t have any effect on what was about to happen on the stage. By getting a quick glance at the performers, two of them looked to be of Asian heritage while the bass player looked white, and more or less appeared to be the band leader as well. The type of music they played was American jazz-standards. After everything was set, the band started playing and a deadly silence just began hunting everyone at the tables. While working at the laboratory, I gained valuable knowledge about the preparation of chemical reagents, and this was more prominent as I received a hands-on experience of the same. In addition, I learnt the process of accurately weighing chemical powder and understood the importance of the same. My expertise in preparation of tissue for microscopic tests also enhanced as I developed the understanding of the significance of tissue handling and processing pertaining to accurate results. The present semester required us to cut tissues, embed them and carry out staining procedure. Previously, it was difficult for me to successfully embed tissues such as skin, which I was able to overcome at the end of the placement. I also got a chance to carry out different staining procedures and understand the application of each. Initially, it was challenging to carry out certain staining procedures such as reticuline staining that requires a clean background to be generated against the tissues. After struggling with this process throughout the placement tenure, I was successful in learning the right technique. Time management skills is another key arena that I show development in after the placement. By time management one refers to the ability to do planning, management and regulation of time frame spend on a certain activity. This skill is noteworthy since it aids in the reduction of workload through prioritisation of important tasks[2]. I learnt the method of multitasking activities for ensuring that all tasks are accomplished within a certain time frame. At this juncture, I would also like to highlight the challenges I faced while working at the RMIT laboratory. As a student, it is desirable to carry out extensive research in core field which is enabled by the provision of a computer system. Since RMIT pathology laboratory does not have any such provision, I faced difficulties in carrying out such research work. In addition, I was answerable to the concerned authority for using my personal mobile phone as I was thought to be using it for personal reasons while it was being used for research purpose. I would also like to mention that delegating tasks that were not a part of my duties was not appropriate. The absence of a laboratory assistant implied that we students had to complete their set of responsibilities. Communication and interpersonal concerns also prevailed as I was subjected to disrespect and insolence at times. Coming to the end of the reflection I would like to conclude that the placement at the RMIT laboratory was a significant one as it gave me chances of bringing in professional as well as personal development.
